Community Service events such as soup kitchens, community center cleanup, neighborhood cleanup, and gardening teach our youth the value of giving back to the community and being responsible. The youth center, a project underway by the Islamic Center of Passaic County, was visited by our youth more than twice to help cleanup. This active participation creates a sense of ownership within the larger community to which they belong as well as training to become active members of society.
This was a comprehensive Youth Series aimed at promoting Islamic
understanding, life-skills and brotherhood. The program is a three part program.
The first part is a lecture by Sheikh Mohamed Qatanani on "Islamic Thought." The
second part is a business skills workshop where the youth are tasked with
creating their own business and progressing and developing it through the
program. The third part is a recreational portion aimed at strengthening the
bonds of brotherhood between the youth.
This was held in commemoration of the hijra of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Mecca to Medina in response to the persecution the Muslims faced. The movie seen was "Lion of the Desert," starring Anthony Quinn and Oliver Reed, directed by Moustapha Akkad. The movie is about
Omar Mukhtar, a Muslim and an Arabian rebel, who fought against the Italian conquering of Libya in WWII. We had an incredible turn out while serving hot chocolate and popcorn to the kids. It was a great night!
The Summer 05 Halalooza Youth Program was a unique experience involving over 50 participants in five teams competing for a summer long competition. Teams earned points based on how much they prayed in the Masjid, community services, lectures attended, workshops and sports. The winning team members each received a free Dell computer. The second place team members received free ticket to a NJ Nets Game.
The Seerahmadan Youth Series ran for the four weeks of Ramadan and targetted the 13-17 age group. There was an attendance of over 120 youth in this program. This program was three parts. The first session was a continuing seminar on the Seerah of the Prophet (pbuh). Through the four week period, we covered the entire life of the Prophet (pbuh.) The second part of the Series was a homework/study session where youth were able to help each other with their studies. The third part was an Iftar, or breaking fast.
There are two Weekly Friday Lectures/Seminars. One is for brothers and the other for sisters. These seminars are aimed at providing a venue for youth to ask questions and learn about their religion. They also bring them together in a healthy environment on Friday nights.
Itikafs are an opportunity for youth to spend the night at the Islamic Center as they concentrate on building their relationship with Allah (swt) as well as bond in a healthy Islamic environment. Itikafs offer a combination of night prayer, interactive lesson and discussion, recreational activity and food.
Workshops offer our youth an opportunity to actively apply learned life skills to real world experiences. This team work workshops created an opportunity for youth to work together on real life scenarios they may encounter dealing with others in school or a social environment.
